Dragon Quest 3's Hot Plate Speed Run and the 11 Seconds World Record
With the recent release of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake there are more eyes on the Dragon Quest series globally than there have been in quite some time. With the new release breaking all sorts of records, I thought it would be interesting to look into different type of records when it came to Dragon Quest 3; speed running records that is.
The Dragon Quest series has been subject to a lot of interest from the speed running community, primarily in Japan where the series is most popular. It is an intriguing series to try to speed run as the games are notorious for being lengthy and at times quite difficult. However over the years the attempts to speed run the games in the series have evolved and speed runners have tried just about everything.

One such speed runner is a gamer who goes by the name of Hitshee. In 2020 the speed runner achieved notority for their anything goes speed run of Dragon Quest 3 where they famously put their Famicom console onto a hot plate and heated it up until it caused a glitch in the game that max leveled their characters to LVL 99 with full stats and abilities. In this speed run Hitshee was able to complete the game in 22 minutes and 22 seconds. A glitchless speed run by comparison on average takes about 2 and a half hours. Hitshee would manipulate the temperature of the console, heating it to temperatures between 50° and 80° celsius in order to trigger the glitch. Other players jumped on board attempting the same method with many destroying their consoles before others discovered the use of ice packs to preserve the system long enough to complete the run.

Pioneering the hot plate method was not enough for Hitshee however. A few years on, Hitshee has discovered the ultimate anything goes speed run. A speed run that stands as the fastest time to end credits ever in Dragon Quest 3. Hitshee achieved an anything goes speed run of 11 seconds for Dragon Quest 3. It only took shortening the pins on the cartridge and effectively destroying the game itself, but this triggers a glitch that after entering your name at the start of the game suddenly causing the end credits dialogue box to appear and thus ending the game.
Hitshee's journey to speed running world record is a testament that if you are able to think outside the box and are willing to handle the heat you can truly achieve anything in life.
Thanks for reading.
